As a former bartender, Jeffrey A. Meszaros saw thousands of colorful bottle caps get tossed in the trash, never to be seen again. One inspired day, he collected and sorted them, turning them into rudimentary artwork. With practice and patience, the artwork got more and more intricate, and employed ever-more bottle caps.

Below show his advanced portraits, which are made up of thousands of flattened bottle caps, and have amazing levels of shading, shadow, and detail. His portraits include iconic actors and celebrities from Anthony Bourdain to Elvis to Marilyn Monroe.

Close-up, the myriad of colorful branded tops are hard to distinguish. But back away, and the faces come into detail, and the faces are instantly recognizable.

See more of Meszaros’ work on his website, where prints and original artwork can be purchased.
