Though certainly nostalgic, circuses have drawn wide criticism in recent years for their treatment of animals, especially trained elephants, bears, and tigers. In an era of growing awareness of animal cruelty, it feels very wrong to see a bear riding a bicycle for our own pleasure.

German group Circus Roncalli has gotten the message loud and clear, and has started using state-of-the-art holographic animals shows instead of live trained animals. The result is still as impressive, in fact more so, with the magic and power of holographic projection. Shown on a 360° 3D stage, the 105-foot-wide, 16-foot-deep arena makes a big impact.

This feels very much like the future of the circus, and it’s great to see a more ethical show, when it comes to using animals.
